wrong diagnosis AS
I am a 21 year old male student from a top 5 university in the UK. At the age of 12 I was diagnosed with AS after I was made to attend psychology sessions after arguing with the junior master at my school.
At the time, my circumstances created a very awkward situation for me in which it seemed everybody, even my own mother, had betrayed me- so I was non too co-operative with the psychologist. My answers to the questionnaire they use for diagnosis were entirely circumstantial and not representative of me in a 'normal situation'. The fact is that on leaving the school I so despised my social problems literally vanished and I easily made friends at university. sorry I digress- its difficult to explain my complex circumstances in a few lines... the gist is that I would like to know how I would go about removing my wrong diagnosis ... what are the necessary procedures in the NHS? the reasons for me wanting to be 'de-diagnosed' range from recovering some self-worth and making a clean break from my past experiences of school. More importantly, having a diagnosis on my medical records will prevent me doing my dream job (dont question this, just accept it- im not saying which job) and may lead to a doctor declaring me unfit to make my own medical decisions should something bad happen to me. |

RE: wrong diagnosis AS
hi,
tbh cant see many jobs where a diagnosis of AS would be held against you (bear in mind the DDA act here which states that you cannot lawfully be discrimminated against ) and those jobs that aspies probably would struggle with such as jobs involving a lot of social interaction would be ones that most aspies wouldnt want anyway. Besides, when applying for certain jobs that have a health questionnaire as a prerequisite surely you could state that you disagree with the diagnosis and put in some explanation a s to why? These health questions are there to protect both you and the employer they should not be there to discrimminate with. I am sure that you link this diagnosis with your time at this school , but any feelings around selfworth should be seen purely in light of the bad experiences you had there and not just linked to AS in itself. As you dont state what is your dream job it is difficult to comment further and I am a bit confused about the bit where you say a diagnosis on your record of AS may "lead to a doctor declaring me unfit to make my own medical decisions should something bad happen to me ". Does this mean that your "dream job" involves giving medical advice? If so, cant see how AS in itself could prevent you from doing this. More worryingly, what is behind the fear of "something bad happening" to you? Sorry to pry but you obviously had a bad time of it at school and need to sort of draw a line under it and move on now. As to your key question, Im afraid that I really dont know whether such a diagnosis could be erased from your medical history. I would have thought not, though my immediate thought would be to see your GP, explain your concerns ,and ask for a second opinion /assesment which would then go on your medical file and supercede the previous diagnosis. |
