family issues on diagnosis
I am a 20 year old Computer Science student
I just received diagnosis "mild to moderate AS" when I was beign checked over after my best freind suggestign I went for a check.
.
My partner is fine with it, my father is fine... but my mother keeps on telling me I havent got it "because it would have been found out long ago"
.
also another reason was because I have always had bad handwritting.
.
as I still live with my parents I am finding it very difficult, can anyone help please?

RE: family issues on diagnosis
Can be a bit tricky this as parents can have all sorts of emotions around their children having any sort of "disability". Is your mum in denial? Does she not believe it because she doesnt want to believe it? Does she equate AS (regardless of the degree) with autism and that word brings up all negative connotations for her? Does she feel guilty-you know, is it because I did such and such when I was pregnant or has someone in the family on her side have it?. The answer is to get her to read up on it and get some facts/info just as you should so that she has an informed view on it rather than ignorance. I am pretty sure from what I have read that a lot of people who have mild AS are not diagnosed for years if at all-after all, many of the traits are probably common to many so called neuro-typical people too, its just that they are often exaggerated more with AS. Try and explain to her how you feel about it -how you feel now and how you felt about stuff growing up. Its not as if youve got some incurable desease or anything! You know, youve now got a diagnosis and dont see it as a label just see it as a step towards getting some help/info/support on some of the stuff that bothers you. At least your partner and dad seem cool about it.Just think you need to talk it through with your mum really, though I do appreciate that this may be easier said than done. Good luck,
jerry
