Getting an Adult Diagnosis Privately
Hello,
I'm new to this forum. I'm 40 years old and find making and keeping friends extremely difficult. I don't know for certain if I have Aspergers but I've done the Aspie Quiz and got an Aspie score of 176 out of 200 and non-Aspie score of 27 out of 200. I would really like to get a proper diagnosis so I can access some help and support, and I think the only way to do this would be to find it privately. I was wondering if anyone knew where I can find a list approved practitioners in this area and roughly how much an assessment would cost. I can't get any help on the NHS. I had Cognitive Behaviourial Therapy for a year on the NHS in the early 90s. That was before I had heard of Aspergers. The therapy did n't address my underlying anxiety and then I was refused any further treatment because I had started going to an evening class. On subsequent visits to my local GP practice I was told I did n't have a problem. Since then I’ve seen a number counsellors/therapists privately, but they did n’t help. One said I could n’t have Aspergers because I had a sense of humour. On my last visit to my GP I asked to be referred to a specialist to at least give me a name for whatever it is I have. All I got was a snotty letter from the local Mental Health Trust saying “further therapy would not be appropriate.” Basically what I want now is a letter from a professional saying I have Aspergers which I can then get confirmed by an NHS consultant. Thanks,. |

RE: Getting an Adult Diagnosis Privately
According to the Autism Act 2009, if you live in England, you are now entitled to an NHS-funded assessment. Google 'Fulfilling and rewarding lives' and print off a copy to show to your GP as proof of your legal entitlement.
