RE: Introduce yourself...
Hello.. My name is Andrea. I have a 17 year old cousin who has been diagnosed with Aspergas syndrome. I am hoping to learn a lot more about this with a view to helping my cousin at this crucial time in his life. Both me and my family are concerned with the things he is getting involved with and want him to work towards living a normal life. He is such an intelligent young man even though he did not attend school. His social life has improved over the past year however this has lead him to not so positive behaviour, drinking, smoking and now smoking drugs. He does not have a job or had any work experience to date. He resides at home with his mother who has liittle control over what he does. I believe he seriously lacks confidence and self worth. I am very worried about my cousin and want him so much to achieve something positive in his life. I was hoping we could be put in touch with an organisation that may be able to get him some placement work experience just for starters, however i dont know where to start ?.. Can anyone help.. ?

RE: Introduce yourself...
Andrea, I would suggest that first place to contact should be the National Autistic Society. Contact them on 01179748430 or email services@nas.org.uk
They can offer advice and support for you and your family as well as offering your cousin help with finding work and work experience placements.

Hi Sarah,
My son has AS and is 23 next year, he is attending university in New Zealand but moved from our home in England.
He felt he needed independance and so far this has worked well, although we miss him very much.
He has had many things to deal with regarding his condition, and has learnt some stratagies on how to overcome them.
I am sure that he could give you advise rather than me, if you want to email him his address is
ben.dabin@btinternet.com
Good luck for the future and I hope things work out, do not despair, there is always hope.
Victor

RE: Introduce yourself...
Hello!

I'm QueerAspie. I'm what's called 'genderqueer', which means I don't identify as either male or female absolutely. It's like being a mental hermaphrodite, I suppose! I don't like gender specific pronouns much, as they make me feel uncomfortable. I'd really appreciate it if you use 'zie' in place of he/she, and 'zir' in place of him/her. If you forget, don't worry, but like I said, the effort would be appreciated Smile

I'm 18, and I never really felt 'right' when I was growing up. Recently, I started thinking there was more to it all than just my other mental health issues. Luckily, I've got a really amazing doctor, and he agreed straight away to send me for testing. And it turns out all this time, my 'freak outs' (as my mum called them), and my lack of social graces, and my repetitive hand motions and my obsession with maps weren't just me being weird, I had Aspergers! Strangly enough, I was tested for memory issues at school, and dyslexia, because of my symptoms, but nobody thought to check me for Aspergers.

I'm pretty proud of who I am. My Aspergers is part of who I am, and diagnosed or otherwise, it always has been. So I guess I'd just like to say hi, and I hope I fit in ok on this here message board! Wink

@ Lyoko 33: What's The Xanadura Project? @ QueerAspie: Do you mind if I say they and them? That's how I usually refer to people who are intersex or physically asexual. (I think of all animals as people, not just humans.)

RE: Introduce yourself...
Hello, I'm Marge. My eldest son was diagnosed with Asperger's a couple of years ago. He is now 34. Previously treated for severe social anxiety. Learning about Asperger's was a revelation, but life is difficult for him. He has no social life, has recently started going to NAS Asperger's Social Group once a month, so will see how that goes. He gets very nervous before he goes, and is very depressed after losing his job. He feels worthless and hates his life. I support him all I can, but feel lost sometimes, so was very pleased to find this site. Seems like a lot of information on here.

RE: Introduce yourself...
Hi
I'm the mother of a 12yr son who has Aspergers Syndrome and Dyslexia. He is a wonderful child, but is very much a loner and doesn't hve many friends, certainly none that come over to play. His world is dominated by computer games and books. It breaks my heart to realise how different his world is to mine when I was his age.
Would like to chat to other parents who have similar lives, dealing with and living with AS affects us all.
thanks
Me
