Asperger’s Syndrome has more negative images than it deserves often because of the challenges and difficulties to other people. While acknowledging the negative perception of Asperger characteristics Brenda Boyd goes on to advocate the large number of advantages to the Asperger’s way of thinking for individuals with AS, those around them and society as a whole
As with Brenda Boyd’s other outing on Asperger’s Syndrome (Parenting a Child with Asperger’s Syndrome,) this book is written in a clean easy to read style showing bags of acceptance and understanding. It is the second-half of the book that contains the 300 Positives (A-Z). The list contains some of the issues and challenges that are likely to come up with when dealing with Asperger’s Syndrome. For each Asperger trait Boyd writes a few sentences describing the downside followed by a number of suggestions on how both the AS and NT’s can be more positive in the way they think and respond to the challenges that each Asperger trait brings up. This does not pertain to be and is not a self-help book or is it a book to help in improving a NT/AS marriage/long term relationship, nor is it a reference style book where one can just dip into and out of. Would I buy this book? Once one has a basic knowledge of Asperger’s Syndrome there is very little new to learn from this book about the basic characteristic and traits of being an Asperger. Therefore if as an Asperger and those closest to them accept and feel happy and contented with the complexities of being an Asperger and live in a relatively Asperger friendly climate then I would not recommend buying. Saying that, if one happens to be able to get ones hands on this book then I would say it’s worth a good read as there are some extremely important positive insights that are explained clearly and simply. However, if as an Asperger or any of those closest to them are struggling, feeling disheartened, despondent and depressed at all the negativity and misleading inaccuracies being thrown around about Asperger’s Syndrome then I would recommend buying this book as it encourages the reader to look at the many positive qualities and attributes of being an Asperger.
